रौशन जमाले यार से --हसरत मोहानी

The poetry of Hasrat is known for its pure depiction of beauty. But it is absolutely incredible to know that he wrote most of these Ghazals while serving a one year rigorous imprisonment sentence. He along with his political Guru – Bal Gangadhar Tilak were the two freedom fighters persecuted by the British. Hasrat had to do backbreaking labor during the entire day and this is the period when he wrote his greatest Love poems. He has also penned “Chupke Chupke Raat Din” – the signature Ghazal of Ghulam Ali.

Raushan jamaal-e-yaar se hai anjuman tamaam
dahakaa huaa hai aatish-e-gul se chaman tamaam

सुंदर प्रेयसीच्या आगमनाने सारी मैफिल उजळून निघाली ;
जसा सुर्याफुलान्वाराच्या कोवळ्या उन्हाने सारी बाग उजळून निघते !

hairat Guruur-e-husn se shoKhii se iztaraab
dil ne bhii tere siikh liye hai.n chalan tamaam

त्या रूप गर्वितेपुढे मी आश्चर्य चकित होतो; मदमस्त चनचल्तेपुदे  बावरून जातो;
ती दुनियेच्या गरजे प्रमाणे अंत रंग बदलायला शिकली आहे !

allaah re jism-e-yaar kii Khuubii ke Khud-ba-Khud
ra.ngiiniyo.n me.n Duub gayaa pairaahan tamaam
अल्लाने तिला इतकी रूपवान बनवले आहे कि तिच्यासारखी तीच ;
तिच्या तेजस्वी कांती पुढे तिच्या भरजरी अंगरख्याचे रंग फिके दिसतात !

dekho to chashm-e-yaar kii jaaduu nigaahiyaa.N
behosh ik nazar me.n hu_ii anjuman tamaam

तिच्या डोळ्यातून निघणार्या जादूभर्या कताक्ष्यांकडे पहा ;
तिच्या  एखाद्या नजरेने  पूर्ण मैफिल बेहोष होऊ शकते!

sheereen yeh naseem hai soz-o-gudaaz-e-Miir
hasrat tere sukhan pe hai lutf-e-sukhan tamaam

आवेग , अभिलाषा , दर्द. अंगार ; कोमलता भले मीरच्या शायरीत (योग्य प्रमाणात) असतील ;
हसरत ( हसरत मोहनी ) तुझ्या शब्दांमदध्ये चातुर्य ; सौन्दर्य  आणि आनंद आहे !
